What Is A Health Walk?
A health walk is 'a purposeful, brisk walk undertaken on a regular basis' but it is about far more than simply walking or improving physical health. Led walks offer the chance for people to socialise, to explore their local area and enjoy the natural environment; they can reduce stress and isolation and improve wellbeing. They can also increase confidence and, with increased self esteem, many walkers go on to become walk leaders.
We know only 40% of men and 28% of women meet the Chief Medical Officers recommendations for physical activity (5 x 30 minutes of moderate activity per week). Walking has an important role to play in addressing this inactivity and creating a healthier nation. It requires no special equipment or expense and is the ideal way for most people to become more active.
Good walking programmes benefit both the individual and the community by making it possible for people to:
• Be sociable/make new friends
• Improve their health
• Explore their local area
• Get our into the natural environment
• Reduce stress/increase wellbeing
• Participate in 'green exercise'
Many health professionals regard walking as the most effective way for most people to exercise, lose weight and increase their physical activity levels. It is recommended that adults should be aiming for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity, five days a week.
