STAR Festival Sunderland - Free Family Fun Day at the Raich Carter Centre

Summer is here and the time is right for Sunderland's third annual STAR Festival. STAR, which stands for Sunderland Together Against Racism is a family fun day taking place on 20th June at the Raich Carter Centre, Commercial Road, Hendon.

The event has been organised by Show Racism the Red Card with funding from City of Sunderland Council and is part of National Refugee Week. There will be pre-organised 5-a-side matches taking place throughout the day and for anyone who wants to improve their own football skills, ex-professional football players will be on hand to deliver as master class. Staying with the theme of football, the Sunderland AFC Foundation will be bringing their 'speed cage' along to measure how fast you can kick a football.

If the beautiful game isn't your thing, there's plenty more to keep you entertained, there'll be face painters, Bouncy Castles and the fantastic balloon modeler, Krazy Kev. Young people can take part in a Bollywood dancing workshop and other fun activities. On the stage there will be live music, a fashion show and a fantastic demonstration from the world famous Zulu Warriors who will be jetting over to the UK from South Africa after taking part in the opening ceremony of the World Cup.

The NHS will be providing free fruit for everyone attending and will be running their 'Bushtucker Trial' with some very interesting fruits for people to taste.

Craig Bankhead, Show Racism the Red Card's Education Manager in the North East said "The STAR Festival is a great day our for families in Sunderland. There's a lot to do and see and everything is absolutely free. Show Racism the Red Card do a lot of work in Sunderland's schools and this is an opportunity for us to engage with families in the City. We're also very pleased that Sunderland's community radio station, SPARK FM, will be broadcasting live from the festival throughout the day."

Show Racism the Red Card will also be providing their Sunderland and England posters to everyone who comes along and will be giving out spot prizes to young people who take part in a scavenger hunt.

The event takes place between 11am and 4pm on Sunday 20th June.
